Swimming Rules 2020

NEW Rules and Guidelines for a Safe Distance Swim Experience:

1. Please apply SUNSCREEN at home 30 Minutes BEFORE your lesson begins. Please DO NOT bring sunscreen with you to your lesson. Sunscreen destroys the pool liner and upsets the balance of chemicals in the pool. Wear a swim shirt instead of sunscreen and reap the rewards of vitamin D! An Awning has been installed over the shallow end of the pool and this will help keep your little ones out of the rays of the sun.

2. Please use the restroom BEFORE coming to lessons. Restrooms will be available for emergencies only!

3. Only swimmers in the pool area when class begins. For our safety and yours, Parents ONLY may watch and wait from the grass or shaded deck area. No other children allowed in the backyard during lessons.

4. Please NO gum in or around the pool!

5. Classes will begin on time and we have warm up exercises that need to be done each and every day. Please be on time! Please come dressed for swimming, with a towel, and goggles if needed. Goggles are a must for levels 3 and up. The ‘seal’ goggles are the BEST for children. See Kathy on how to fit goggles to your child’s eyes.

6. Girls, please pull your hair back out of your face. We don’t want to create bad habits when learning to side breathe. Please do not use Bobbie pins, they rust and ruin the bottom of the pool.

7. NO ONE IN OR ON THE TREE-HOUSE, SWINGS or OTHER PLAY EQUIPMENT, before, after, or during swim lessons.

8. At the end of a lesson, a treat may be provided for your child. Please ensure that the wrappers find the garbage cans. We have struggled with this one in the past.  If it continues to be a problem, we will need to discontinue handing out treats.

9. EARS: To prevent swimmers ear use equal parts of the following home recipe.

Rubbing Alcohol 1 Tbsp. White Vinegar

Use equal parts of both ingredients. Keep in a small container. Use an eye dropper and drop 3 or 4 drops in each ear after swimming.

10. On the last day of class, a portion of our lesson will be on water safety.  If you have a life jacket for your child, please bring it to class.  We have some available if you do not.  This simple but important lesson could someday save your child's life as it has proven to be fact for some of my former students.

11. At the end of your session, your child will be assessed, a certificate will be given and guidelines for the next class/level will be given. If you have any questions on your child’s assessment, please talk with the teacher.

12. Last but not least.  Please, Please, do not park in front of anyone's mailbox.  We have the meanest mailman in the world!  He leaves me mean notes and looks.  Please use the driveway to park and along the north/west side of the road along the white fence.  Thank you!

Please read through these rules and guidelines with your child.

Thank you and again, have fun!

Levels I: Water Exploration

PURPOSE: Orient to aquatic environment, create a sound foundation for aquatic and safety skills.

30 Minutes for $30.00/session, 6 children/class

Age 2 (if potty trained) and up.
There are no prerequisites for this class. The objective of level 1 is to help students feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely. At this level students also start to develop good attitudes and safe practices around the water. Students who have had pleasant water experiences complete this level quickly. However, fear of the water may be a major issue for some students regardless of age. Before students enter the water for the first time, we acquaint them with the swimming area and explain the safety rules for our facility. We impress on all students, and especially younger ones, that they can and will learn to swim if they follow our directions, as long as they are willing to try out new things even skills they consider scary at first. We encourage students to explore movements in the water and observe what comes naturally to them in order to build on those strengths. Students are encouraged to ask questions so we can address any fears. Parents are also encouraged to ask questions to also help address questions their children may have as the course progresses. Throughout the course, we provide a wide variety of experiences to meet the course objectives that provide a fun and safe environment.

SKILLS PRACTICED AND LEARNED:
*Enter and exit water safely
*Submerge mouth, nose and eyes
*Exhale underwater through mouth and nose
*Open eyes underwater; pick up submerged object
*Change direction while walking or paddling
*Roll over from front to back and back to front with support
*Explore floating on front and back with support
*Explore swimming on front and back using arm and leg actions with support
*Front glide with face submerged
*Safely use a life jacket

Mommy and Me: Water Safety and Exploration

PURPOSE: Orient to aquatic environment, create a sound foundation for aquatic and safety skills.

30 Minutes for $30.00/session, 6 babies and mommies/class

Age 6 months to 6 years. All babies must wear a swim diaper with plastic pants over the swim diaper.
There are no prerequisites for this class.
The objective of this is to help mommies and babies/children, feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely. All babies and children are drawn to water and drowning is the number one killer for children under 4 years of age. What your child will learn depends on his or her age and developmental readiness, but in all cases at minimum, your child will learn to roll onto his or her back to bloat, rest and breathe, and to maintain this position until help arrives.

Levels II: Primary Skills

Purpose: Expand on fundamental aquatic locomotion and safety skills.

40 minutes for $32.00/session, 6 - 8 children/class

Students entering this course must have a level 1 certificate or must be able to demonstrate all the completion requirements in level 1. The objective of level 2 is to give students success with fundamental skills. Students learn to float without support and to recover to a vertical position. This level marks the beginning of true locomotive skills; where students explore alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back which lays the foundation for future strokes. Level 2 adds to the self-help and basic rescue skills began in level 1.

SKILLS PRACTICED AND LEARNED:
*Enter water by stepping or jumping from the side.
*Exit water sagely using steps or side
*Submerge entire head
*Blow bubbles submerging head in a rhythmic pattern (bobbing)
*Open eyes underwater, pick up a submerged object in shallow water
*Float in front and back
*Perform front and back glide
*Change direction of travel, paddling on front and back
*Tread water using arm and leg motions (chest deep)
*Swim on front, back, and side using combined arm and leg actions
*Safely use a life jacket in shallow and deep water
**Introduction to deep water swimming

Levels III: Stroke Readiness

Purpose: Increase swimming skill competency: practice safety and non-swimming rescue skills.

45 minute for $33.00/session, 6 - 8 children/class

Students entering this course must have a level 2 certificate or must be able to demonstrate all the completion requirements in level 2 and be able to swim in deep water. The objective of level 3 is to build on the skills in level 2 by providing additional guided practice. We will teach students to coordinate the front crawl and back crawl and introduce elements of the butterfly and the fundamentals of treading water. Students should also learn rules for head first entries into the water from the side of the pool (9' or deeper). As with all skills levels there will be additional safety skills presented.

SKILLS PRACTICED AND LEARNED:
*Jump into deep water from the side
*Dive from kneeling or standing position
*Submerge and retrieve an object in chest deep water
*Bob with the head fully submerged
*Rotary breathing in horizontal position
*Perform front and back glide using two different kicks
*Float on front and back in deep water
*Change from horizontal to vertical position on front and back
*Tread water using hand and leg movements in deep water
*Perform front and back crawl
*Butterfly - kick and body motion
*Perform the HELP and HUDDLE positions while using a life jacket

Levels IV: Stroke Development

Purpose: Develop confidence and competency in strokes and safety skills beyond preceding level: introduce breast stroke and sidestroke.

1 hour for $35.00/session, 6 -8 children/class

Students entering this course must have a level 3 certificate or must be able to demonstrate all the completion requirements. The objective of level 4 is to develop confidence in the strokes learned thus far and to improve other aquatic skills. We will help students improve these skills and increase their endurance by swimming familiar strokes (Front/Back crawl) for greater distances. We will help student's continue to build on the butterfly and introduce fully, the elementary backstroke, breaststroke and elements of the sidestroke. Basics of turning are also introduced during this level.

SKILLS PRACTICED AND LEARNED:
*Perform a dive from a standing or stride position
*Swim underwater
*Perform feet-first surface dive
*Perform open turns on front and back
*Tread water using sculling arm motions with different kicks
*Front and back crawl (no stopping on sides of pool)
*Breaststroke
*Butterfly
*Elementary backstroke
*Swim on side using scissor like kick
*Perform compact jump into water from a height while wearing a life jacket

Levels V: Stroke Refinement

Purpose: Continue stroke refinement: introduce butterfly, surface dives and springboard diving.

1 hour for $34.00/session, 6 -8 children/class

Students entering this course must have a level 4 certificate or be able to demonstrate the course requirements for level 4. The objective of level 5 is coordination and refinement of strokes. Participants refine their performance of all the strokes (Front crawl, back crawl, butterfly, breast stroke, elementary backstroke, and sidestroke) and increase their distances. Flip turns on the front and back crawl are introduced.

Diving Class:
Must be confident in the deep water. (Level 3 and above)
30 minutes/$30 per session 6 -8 kids per class.

Purpose: Provides further confidence, coordination and refinement in diving.

As children progress they will advance in levels throughout the summer.
